I think we all go through times when it seems so dark that the melody of our life seems lost. David, author of so many Psalms, went through those sorts of times too.
In David's case, lots of people were trying to kill him. He hid in caves, he fought battles, he saw beloved friends killed, & he still found a way to praise God. I am a great fan of Psalm 37:23-25: "The steps of a man are established by the Lord, and He delights in his way. When he falls, he shall not be hurled headlong; because the Lord is the One who holds his hand. I have been young, and now I am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, or his descendants begging bread."
Sometimes I think we, as Christians, expect life to be a cake walk. We're God's kids, after all, so it should all be easy from here. I know I fall into that trap all the time. Yet, Job 5:7 says "Man is born to trouble, as surely as sparks fly upward." (KJV) As human beings, there are going to be hard times. It's just part of life.
I think that's one of the reasons that God made us all members of one Body. Ecclesiastes 4:9,10,12 tells us "Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up...If one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart." (NAS)
When we are struggling, the other members of our Body, our brothers & sisters in the Lord, are there to lift us up with prayer & encouragement. Or to challenge us to more godly behavior. Because of God's wisdom in making us all one Body, we are not alone. We are not overpowered when we struggle with challenges in our lives.
So, I say this to myself as I do to my readers: If you are struggling to believe, take heart. You WILL hear the melody again. All is not lost. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." [Psalm 30:5 (KJV)]
